Drumming at Monty Hind Youth Centre with Jude & BeatFeet Drumming Workshops
We had an amazing time recently at the Monty Hind Youth Centre in Nottingham, where BeatFeet’s CEO, Jude, led a fun, inclusive drumming workshop for young people at the centre. The Centre is a trusted space for young people in Nottingham to feel safe, inspired and connected.
Why drumming works so well for SEND and neurodivergent groups:
Rhythm and percussion are naturally accessible - you don’t need prior experience, and you can join in at your own pace.
Drumming activities help build listening skills, attention and timing, which support developmental areas often relevant in SEND communities.
Group drumming nurtures teamwork, shared focus and non-verbal communication - ideal for those who sometimes find verbal communication challenging.
The safe, inclusive space of Monty Hind Youth Centre allows participants to explore creativity without judgement, gain confidence, and express themselves through sound and movement.
At this workshop, Jude invited the group to explore global rhythms, call-and-response patterns and peer-led rhythms., ending with a short performance to really show other members of the club what can be achieved in music-making workshops. The Centre’s ethos of being welcoming to all young people made it the perfect home for this session.
We’re really looking forward to returning to Monty Hind in the new year, continuing our journey of rhythm, connection and creativity, and especially making sure every young person, whatever their background or need, has the chance to shine through music.
Thanks to the leadership team for inviting us over to work with their young people.
